It’s Like No Other Place on Earth

New York City is one of the most amazing places on Planet Earth. It’s not just a big city; there are several cities on the planet that have more people. But no city has more influence.

The city of New York is divided into 5 separate areas called “boroughs.” And each borough is big enough to be a separate city on its own. Those five boroughs are named Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, The Bronx, and Staten Island.

Visitors to New York can see the Statue of Liberty, which stands tall in New York Harbor. Or they can visit Times Square, which is in the heart of the world’s greatest theater district.

Or visitors they ride to the top of the Empire State Building. Or wallk across the Brooklyn Bridge. Or stroll through Central Park. Or visit the Bronx Zoo. Or walk down Wall Street, which happens to be the financial capital of the world.

New York has several knicknames. It’s known to some people as the Big Apple; it’s known to other people as “The City That Never Sleeps.” And some people prefer to call it “The City So Nice They Named It Twice,” which refers to the fact that the official name of New York City is actually “New York, New York” (because the city of New York is located in the state of New York).

By any name — or nickname — New York is a truly amazing place.

Brooklyn: A City Within a City

Brooklyn, which is the borough with the highest population. Over two and a half million people live there. That means that the borough of Brooklyn has as many people as America’s third-largest city: Chicago.

Brooklyn is connected to Manhattan by a bridge: The Brooklyn Bridge, which was finished in 1883. It’s the most famous bridge in New York and it takes you over the East River, but you can also take a subway and ride through a tunnel that goes under the river..

It’s a Fact: The Bronx Zoo is one of the largest zoos of its kind in the world.

It’s a Fact: About 1.4 million people live in the Bronx. If The Bronx were a separate city, it would be about the same size as San Diego, California.
