Silly Putty

As an invention, it didn’t work. As a toy, it did. It happened like this. In the 1940s, scientists invented a funny-feeling substance that bounced, stretched, and lifted pictures off of newspapers. The stuff was fun to play with, but the scientists couldn’t figure out what to do with it.

Eventually, a businessman named Peter Hodgson began buying the goop in large batches and selling it in little egg-shaped containers. He named his toy Silly Putty, and he sold millions of eggs.

Peter Hodgson proved that no idea is too silly if it works. So keep your eyes wide open. You may have a bright idea that makes your world a happier place. And if you can discover something that improves your corner of the world, that’s not silly; that’s good.
