Vermont is a northeastern state in the New England region of the United States. Vermont is the only state in New England that does not border the Atlantic Ocean. It’s surrounded by Massachusetts on the South, New York on the west, New Hampshire on its east, and Canada to the north.
In 1609, explorer Samuel de Champlain claimed the Vermont region for France. The first French settlement was established in 1666. The first English settlers moved into the area in 1724 and England gained control of the area in 1763 after the French and Indian War.
In 1775 Ethan Allen and his Green Mountain Boys won one of the first important American victories of the Revolutionary War by capturing Fort Ticonderoga and Crown Point. In 1777 Vermont adopted its first constitution, abolishing slavery and providing for universal male suffrage, which meant that all men could vote, even if they didn’t own property.
Vermont became the fourteenth state in 1791. It was the first state admitted after the original thirteen colonie. And Vermont was the first state to outlaw slavery.

Today, Vermont is known for its fabulous forests, it’s covered bridges, its ski slopes, and its maple syrup.
